Boiler fault?

Resetting your boiler: how to do it sensibly

3 min readPublished on 15 September 2026

A reset restarts the boiler after a lockout. It does not fix the cause; it simply gives the appliance another chance to run. So do it deliberately, and follow your own manual.

Note the error code first

The message often disappears after a reset, so write down the make, model and exact code first, or photograph the display.

Follow the manual for your appliance

Every manufacturer describes how a reset works on that model. Use only the button or action described there, and do not open the appliance.

One reset is enough

If the boiler restarts normally, keep an eye on whether the message returns.

Do not keep resetting. The boiler locks out for a reason, and repeated restarts can make matters worse.

When you should not reset

  • You smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide.
  • You can see water at or under the boiler.
  • You hear loud or unusual noises from the appliance.
  • The boiler is visibly damaged or has overheated.

When should you call an engineer?

  • The fault returns after one reset.
  • The boiler will not start at all.
  • There is a leak, a smell of gas or an unusual noise.
  • You are not sure whether resetting is sensible in your situation.

Does the fault keep coming back?

Report the fault with the code you noted down and we will contact you to arrange a visit.
